Bridging Expertise & Impact: A Conversation with Jennifer Klein Strauss on Philanthropy and Client-Centered Giving

From New York City to Houston, Jennifer Klein Strauss’ professional journey is defined by a passion for problem-solving, relationship-building, and making a meaningful impact.
A Path Shaped by Complexity and Connection
After law school in New York City, Jen began her career at a large firm handling complex tax matters, including entity and transactional income tax. Seeking deeper engagement with clients, she transitioned to a boutique firm specializing in trust and estate planning. “I was drawn to the private client world because I wanted to build long-term relationships, work with multiple generations of a family, and grow alongside them,” she recalls.
After several years, Jen received an opportunity to work in the General Counsel’s Office at the Metropolitan Museum of Art (MET). “Working at the MET was incredibly fun and rewarding! I got to see charitable estate planning gifts of art and cash from the recipient or institution’s view, as opposed to the donor or contributor’s view. It was fascinating to see how these institutions honor restrictions that were put into place decades earlier. I learned so much about nonprofits and different charities through my experience at the MET, which influences how I advise my clients today in their charitable planning.”
Jen’s move out of the Big Apple came when her husband, David, started his own company based in Houston. Jen admits that initially she knew little about the city and remarked playfully, “I assumed Houston was dry and dusty.” However, she was pleasantly surprised at how quickly she was able to find a welcoming professional network. “When I first came down to Houston, I sent an email to Yolanda Knull and Alan Ytterberg, asking them for a coffee. When talking with Yolanda, we hit it off when it came to our shared passion for charitable planning.” Fast forward to today, and this coffee led to a long, fruitful relationship as Jen is nearing her 10-year milestone at Ytterberg Deery Knull, LLP, and continues to credit Yolanda’s enduring mentorship as a guiding influence in her work.
Philanthropy as a Core Conversation
In advising clients with philanthropic goals, Jen emphasizes the importance of integrating giving into broader financial planning. “You can’t shy away from bringing philanthropy up. Especially when clients are at an inflection point—a big liquidity event, lifestyle shift, or generational transition—those are the moments to bring up charitable planning,” Jen notes. Today, charitable giving is more accessible than ever, thanks to tools like donor advised funds, which empower families to engage meaningfully with the causes they care about while integrating philanthropy into their overall financial planning.
Partnering with the Community Foundation
Jen’s professional relationship with Greater Houston Community Foundation began about seven years ago when she joined its Advisor Outreach Committee. Jen shared, “It was a win-win. I gained an understanding of sophisticated charitable solutions and I bring that knowledge back to my clients. Greater Houston Community Foundation offers a high-touch, high-level of service and understands what our clients’ needs are. I aim to be a bridge between the Community Foundation and my clients who want to make a real impact in our community.”

Jen praises the Community Foundation’s accessibility and collaborative spirit. “There’s never a downside to exploring options with the Community Foundation. Often, neither I nor my client has landed on exactly what the right answer is—we need their expertise, and I appreciate their open-minded approach to conversations, focusing on big-picture goals.”
Jen recalls one memorable collaboration involving a client with a private foundation seeking to continue its impact without being too burdensome for the designated successors. The Community Foundation’s expertise—offering technical, administrative, and organizational support—allowed the client to focus on mission-driven decision-making. “My client got to execute their vision and engage in the impact without the homework of the administrative burden. My client has been able to see the experience that their private foundation’s successors will have, which has also provided peace of mind to see a plan in action that will continue in perpetuity,” Jen explains.
Guiding Clients Toward Meaningful Giving
Jen acknowledges that not every client of hers is an immediate fit for the Community Foundation, and she determines fit based on a client’s dedication to charitable impact. She evaluates factors such as the size and complexity of their giving, passion for specific causes, and commitment to involving future generations in philanthropy. “The Community Foundation works best for my clients who need a higher level of expertise, when they are passionate about a specific impact area, who are serious about engaging the next generation or ensuring their legacy continues, or who want to be part of a donor community,” she notes.
Through her service on the Advisor Outreach Committee, she continues to bridge knowledge between the donor community and the Community Foundation, sharing insights about philanthropic planning while also deepening her understanding the Community Foundation’s expertise.
A Personal Commitment to Community
Jen’s commitment to service began in college and has been constant through her professional and personal life. In New York, she was involved with Girls on the Run NYC, where she chaired the Board, coached youth teams and ran marathons for charity. After moving to Houston, she quickly immersed herself in boards, serving on the Board of Directors for ROCO, Houston’s professional chamber orchestra, for six years.

Jen shared how her philanthropy tends to focus on children’s programs and early education. Currently, Jen is completing her seventh year of service on the Board of Directors of Collaborative for Children and is the Board Chair. Jen opens up, “The more I have learned about Collaborative for Children, the more impact I see. Having access to high-quality early childhood education is every child’s birthright. Kindergarten readiness directly impacts the entire course of a child’s academic life. If Houston wants to be this innovative city, we need to prepare our children for that and invest in high-quality early childhood education. Preparing our children today ensures an innovative, thriving city tomorrow.”
At home, she models giving for her own two children, Harry, who is eight years old, and Millie, who is six. “We talk about what we’re doing with Collaborative for Children, and I encourage them to share what we have. It is more important that everyone has enough than us getting more.”

Jen noted how giving back and service were implicit in how she grew up, citing her mother, who was involved in her school and church growing up. When Jen celebrates Hanukkah with her in-laws, each year her mother-in-law dedicates one night to giving. In place of wrapped gifts that night, every grown-up and child in the family names a charity for the family to support and shares why that organization is essential. “Even small acts, like choosing to support a charity during the holidays, through this we are teaching our kids about impact and generosity.”
The Community Foundation Difference
From Jen’s perspective, the Community Foundation stands out for its combination of breadth, sophistication, and service. With deep knowledge of Houston’s nonprofit landscape and donor community, the Community Foundation connects clients with causes they care about while providing reliable, high-touch support. “The Community Foundation allows donors to focus on impact and vision while handling the operational details—peace of mind for everyone involved,” she says.
For Jen, philanthropic advising is about more than strategy; it’s about shaping legacies, empowering families, and fostering a culture of intentional giving. Through her continued partnership with the Community Foundation, Jen helps clients navigate this complex landscape with clarity, confidence, and heart.
