Your Brand Is Already Telling a Story. What Does It Say About Community Impact?

Companies have an important role to play in strengthening the communities where they operate. Today’s customers, employees, donors, investors, and community stakeholders want to understand how organizations use their resources, relationships, and expertise to respond to local needs and create positive change.

As corporate giving continues to grow, companies that stand out are those that align their community investments with a clear philanthropic strategy and a genuine commitment to impact. According to Giving USA 2026: The Annual Report on Philanthropy for the Year 2025, giving by corporations reached an estimated $43.67 billion in 2025, growing by 3.1 percent from 2024, or 0.5 percent when adjusted for inflation. Diving a bit deeper, according to the Lily Family School of Philanthropy at Indiana University Indianapolis, over the last five years corporate giving has grown 60%, outpacing the 29% growth seen in total giving.

Corporate giving is no longer viewed as a separate philanthropic activity. It has become an important way for companies to act on their values, support community priorities, and build trust through consistent investment. Organizations that connect their charitable efforts to real community outcomes create deeper relationships and demonstrate their commitment to making a difference.

The most effective companies do not simply write checks or promote generosity. They invest with purpose, measure what matters, and share stories that help people understand the difference those investments make.

Build the Strategy Before You Tell the Story

Before a company can tell a compelling community-impact story, it must first define what it wants its philanthropy to achieve. Effective giving begins with more than selecting a cause. It requires a thoughtful understanding of community needs, a clear assessment of where the company’s resources and expertise can make the greatest difference, and a deliberate plan for measuring results over time.

Greater Houston Community Foundation helps companies turn good intentions into meaningful, strategic action. Whether through developing a philanthropic strategy, establishing and administering a corporate donor advised fund, creating employee giving and matching-gift programs, managing scholarship initiatives, or designing employee disaster relief funds, the Community Foundation provides the expertise and infrastructure needed to maximize impact.

When philanthropy is guided by purpose and supported by a clear framework, a company’s story tells itself. It becomes a narrative grounded in consistent action, trusted partnerships, and measurable progress, demonstrating not only what the company gives, but the difference it helps create in the community.

How Strategic Philanthropy Builds Trust Through Community Impact

When companies invest in community priorities with consistency and care, they earn trust with the people who matter most to their mission. Likewise, employees want to work for organizations that demonstrate purpose beyond profit. When community impact becomes part of your brand narrative, it can help:

  • Build trust with customers and stakeholders
  • Strengthen employee pride, retention, and engagement
  • Differentiate your organization from competitors
  • Enhance corporate reputation
  • Attract socially conscious talent
  • Demonstrate leadership within your community

Brad Deutser, President and CEO of Deutser, a consultancy firm that designs people-focused change solutions, established donor advised funds at the Community Foundation for every one of his employees. These funds enable his team to support organizations across the community in unique ways. “It’s become a critical part of who we are,” Brad says. “Our team talks about what they’re supporting, what they care about. It connects them to their communities—and each other.”

Brad cited how the company’s giving culture is such a unique benefit. “Our people love it, and it’s an incredible differentiator,” he adds. “People want to give back—sometimes they just don’t know how. When we created individual employee funds, we gave them a pathway to give and an expectation that giving is part of who we are and how we serve.”

A strong corporate giving strategy helps employees and community stakeholders see your organization as a committed community partner rather than simply a business operating in the market. Over time, that consistency builds trust and creates a more credible story than brand messaging alone.

Move Beyond Donations to Community Impact Stories

Many organizations share how much they donated or how many volunteer hours employees contributed. While those metrics are valuable, people connect most strongly with stories that explain what those investments made possible for the community. Instead of focusing solely on dollars donated, highlight:

  • Families who gained access to critical resources
  • Students who received educational opportunities
  • Neighborhoods that experienced positive change
  • Nonprofits that expanded their reach
  • Employee volunteers making a meaningful difference

For example, instead of saying, “Our company donated $50,000 to local education programs,” a stronger impact story might say, “Our company helped 200 students access college readiness coaching, financial aid guidance, and career mentoring.” The second version helps readers understand what the investment made possible.

Joni Baird, a highly regarded professional in corporate citizenship and social responsibility for her ability to advance strategic corporate objectives as well as brand, image, and reputation, shared with us, “It is important to remember to communicate the impact of volunteerism by telling stories and publishing photos of their successes. Remind employees of these shared experiences that may contribute to those employees having greater satisfaction and remaining loyal to your company.”

When companies transform their corporate giving from a financial transaction into a clear story of community outcomes, stakeholder and employee engagement becomes a natural byproduct.

Align Giving with Your Company’s Values

The strongest community impact stories connect directly to organizational values and mission. Ask your team:

  • What causes align with our purpose?
  • What challenges exist in the communities where we operate?
  • How can our resources create lasting change?
  • What outcomes matter most to our employees and stakeholders?

For example, access to education has been a pillar of Southwest Airlines® for more than 50 years, with a strong belief that educated communities are empowered communities. The Community Foundation helps administer their Southwest Airlines® Founders Scholarship and the Southwest Airlines® Community Scholarship.

The Southwest Airlines® Community Scholarship benefits students pursuing higher education and career interests in the airline industry. In 2024, the Southwest Airlines® Community Scholarship awarded $140,000 in scholarships to 28 students, with 18 of these scholarships being renewal awards.

Additionally, the Southwest Airlines® Founders Scholarship honors the founders of Southwest Airlines®, Herb Kelleher and Rollin King, and benefits dependents of Southwest Airlines® employees. In 2024, the Southwest Airlines® Founders Scholarship awarded 22 scholarships totaling $80,000, with 12 of those awards being renewal awards. Renewal scholarship awards are critical, as they allow students to have continued support on their educational journey.

Just as each scholarship program is a natural fit for Southwest Airlines® because it supports employees and students pursuing degrees in the airline industry, a company’s corporate giving should be an organic extension of its values, mission, and culture.

When a company’s giving priorities align with its values, community investments feel authentic, consistent, and easier for employees and stakeholders to understand.

Engage Employees as Story Ambassadors

Employees are among your most influential brand advocates. When team members participate in volunteer opportunities, workplace giving campaigns, or company-supported nonprofit initiatives, they become powerful storytellers who can share authentic experiences. Consider encouraging employees to:

  • Share volunteer stories
  • Participate in team service projects
  • Support company-sponsored nonprofit initiatives
  • Highlight personal connections to community causes

Del Papa Distributing Company, which established one of the Community Foundation’s first corporate donor advised funds in 2003, fosters a culture of service by encouraging employees to give back to the communities they call home. Team members regularly participate in employee volunteer programs such as sponsored Meals on Wheels routes, holiday toy drives, walks to help end Alzheimer’s disease, beach cleanups, and other local volunteer initiatives.

To further showcase how its commitment to its communities starts with its people, Del Papa also developed the Community Leader Award in honor of Lawrence J. Del Papa to recognize one employee each year who demonstrates selflessness and dedicated service as a volunteer in their community. The recipient is selected through a competitive process that emphasizes “giving freely and unselfishly of one’s time and talent to strengthen their local community.” In recognition, the company makes a $5,000 donation to a charity designated by the recipient.

Emily Murello, Manager of Talent and Development at Del Papa Distributing and the 2026 Community Leader Award recipient, shared, “One of my favorite things about working at Del Papa is that our communities always come first. Giving back isn’t just something we talk about. It’s part of who we are. Seeing our company supporting local organizations and events, encouraging employees to get involved, and truly caring about making a difference is pretty amazing. Not many companies make community involvement such a big part of their culture, and I’m proud to work for a company that does just that every day.”

Examples like Del Papa Distributing show how shared experiences with employees and service-based recognition can strengthen workplace culture while expanding the reach of a company’s community impact efforts.

Measure and Communicate Results

Effective corporate philanthropy combines heart and strategy. Organizations should establish clear objectives and measure outcomes that demonstrate meaningful progress. Track indicators such as:

  • Volunteer participation
  • Funds distributed or grants out
  • Community members served
  • Program outcomes
  • Nonprofit relationships supported
  • Employee engagement metrics

Sharing measurable results helps stakeholders understand the real-world impact of your investments and reinforces organizational accountability.

Build Long-Term Community Partnerships

The most impactful corporate giving programs focus on relationships, not one-time transactions. Long-term relationships with nonprofit organizations can generate sustainable outcomes while strengthening community trust.

When companies consistently support community priorities over time, they establish credibility and become recognized leaders in local philanthropy. These relationships also create richer stories that showcase progress, collaboration, and lasting change.

Community Impact Creates Lasting Brand Value

Corporate giving is about more than generosity. It is about creating a legacy of leadership, purpose, and positive change. Organizations that integrate philanthropy into the way they serve their communities show that business success and community impact can go hand in hand.

More than 120 corporations have trusted the Community Foundation to execute their strategic giving programs that reflect their values, engage employees, and strengthen the communities they serve. The Community Foundation does this through:

  • Corporate Donor Advised Funds
  • Strategic Advising & Consulting
  • Matching Gift Program
  • Employee Giving Programs
  • Corporate Scholarship Funds
  • Employee Disaster Relief Funds

By investing in people, strengthening communities, and sharing authentic stories of change, companies create value that extends far beyond the bottom line.
