Understanding Houston is a cornerstone of the Community Foundation’sCommunity Impact Fund, which is committed to using data, research, collaboration, and community voice to drive positive change. Through this initiative, we aim to ensure Houston remains a vibrant, opportunity-rich region for generations to come.
By aggregating and analyzing over 200 indicators, Understanding Houston offers a comprehensive view of quality-of-life issues across Fort Bend, Harris, and Montgomery counties—our region’s most populous areas. This dynamic platform helps donors, nonprofits, community leaders, and residents better understand Houston’s strengths and most pressing challenges, empowering them to take data-informed action.
Our strategic data partner, Rice University’s Kinder Institute for Urban Research, is a nationally respected think-and-do tank that addresses urban challenges in Houston and beyond. Their data and insights have been essential in shaping our understanding of critical issues such as economic mobility, disaster recovery, and housing insecurity.
To date, the Understanding Houston team has briefed more than 4,000 community leaders on pressing topics like youth mental health, maternal health, housing insecurity, post-secondary success, and disaster resilience—often in intimate settings that encourage learning, dialogue, and action. The team has delivered data briefings to leaders across philanthropy, nonprofit, government, and business ranging from big-picture presentations that highlight key regional trends to focused deep dives on specific issues.
