Sunshine Kids Scholarship Fuels Hope Beyond Cancer

For young people affected by childhood cancer, the journey does not end when treatment does. Interrupted school experiences, ongoing health concerns, and financial barriers can make planning for college, career training, or other educational goals more difficult. Scholarships for childhood cancer survivors and pediatric oncology patients can help young people move from treatment and recovery toward restoring a sense of stability, building confidence, and opening pathways to the future they envision.

A Mission Rooted in Care

Since 1982, Sunshine Kids has supported children with cancer through programs designed to bring connection, encouragement, and positive experiences during some of life’s most difficult moments. The Sunshine Kids Foundation was founded in Houston by Rhoda Tomasco, who saw firsthand while volunteering in a pediatric cancer unit, how extended treatment could leave children feeling isolated and discouraged. Her response was simple and powerful: create opportunities for young cancer patients to spend time together, build self-esteem, experience a sense of personal accomplishment, and enjoy the kind of fun every child deserves.

What began as a small group of children who named themselves the “Sunshine Kids” has grown into a national nonprofit serving children from hospitals across the country. Through national trips, regional events, local activities, in-hospital programming, Back-to-School programming, and more, Sunshine Kids continues to provide a compassionate response to children’s emotional needs during cancer treatment, helping children and families find community, joy, and hope during difficult seasons. Funded by individual contributions, corporations, and foundations, all programs are provided completely free of charge.

A Scholarship That Eases the Road Ahead

In 2022, Sunshine Kids established the Sunshine Kids Scholarship as a natural extension of its mission. Rather than ending support when treatment or participation in youth programming concludes, the Sunshine Kids Foundation continues investing in young people through renewable scholarship support for college, trade school, and university students as they take meaningful steps toward higher education and long-term success.

For many families, the financial impact of childhood cancer does not end with treatment. They may face years of medical costs, missed work, travel, and ongoing follow-up care, even as students begin planning for college or career training. For childhood cancer survivors, future scans and health concerns can continue into adulthood, keeping financial stress and emotional uncertainty close.

Jennifer Wisler, Executive Director of the Sunshine Kids Foundation, sees the scholarship program as another meaningful way to recognize all that young cancer patients and survivors have overcome. “These kids face challenges most of their peers can’t even imagine–hospitalizations, chemotherapy, time away from school, and so much uncertainty about the future,” Jennifer said. “Along the way, cancer can also take away so many of the experiences that are simply part of growing up.” Many young people undergoing cancer treatment miss milestones their peers may take for granted, from getting a driver’s license and attending prom to playing sports, participating in extracurricular activities, or simply spending time with friends. “Our scholarship program is one way we can help give some of that opportunity back,” Jennifer explained. “Cancer may have changed parts of their childhood, but it shouldn’t limit what comes next. We want our Sunshine Kids to know that we believe in their dreams, we are proud of how far they’ve come, and we are excited to invest in the futures they are building.”

By helping cover education-related expenses, the scholarship fund is designed to reduce financial stress and support long-term educational goals so students can focus more fully on their studies, future goals, and the next chapter of their lives. The Sunshine Kids Scholarship program supports eligible pediatric oncology patients and survivors who have participated in Sunshine Kids programs and are pursuing higher education.

Eligible applicants must:

• Have been diagnosed with cancer at age 18 or younger
• Be registered as a Sunshine Kid for at least three months
• Have participated in Sunshine Kids programs
• Be a graduating high school senior, previous graduate, or current college student

This thoughtful approach ensures that the scholarship remains closely aligned with the organization’s mission while supporting students who have demonstrated a commitment to their educational journey.

What This Scholarship Makes Possible

Jennifer shared a story about Leila, a former Sunshine Kid who was diagnosed with cancer, received care at MD Anderson, and participated in many Sunshine Kids experiences, including prom, field trips, and group programming. Leila went on to become one of the program’s early scholarship graduates and is now a nurse. Today, she gives back by volunteering with Sunshine Kids and supporting the same kinds of experiences that once encouraged her.

Stories like Leila’s reveals the deeper, enduring impact of Sunshine Kids’ work. The hope is that former Sunshine Kids participants later return as chaperones, volunteers, and health care professionals, helping guide children through challenges they know firsthand. Their lived experience brings compassion and connection to the children they serve. Seeing someone who once received support choose to give it demonstrates how support received during childhood can grow into a lifelong commitment to service, compassion, and hope for the next generation of Sunshine Kids.

Why This Mission Resonates

Behind every scholarship award is a young person representing the next generation of leaders. Jennifer expanded, “Our Sunshine Kids demonstrate extraordinary courage, adaptability, and determination.” She continued, “Their resilience is often unmatched, and many have an incredible desire to give back to others.” For many childhood cancer survivors, pursuing higher education represents more than an academic milestone; it is working toward a future shaped by possibility rather than limitation. It is a step toward independence, stability, and the opportunity to build the life they envision for themselves.

Since 2022, that mission has translated into meaningful support for 52 individual recipients through 125 scholarship awards, including renewals for students continuing their education year after year. In total, the Sunshine Kids Scholarship has awarded over $600,000, helping students move forward with greater confidence as they pursue a bright future filled with possibility, hope, and promise beyond cancer.

Since its inception, Greater Houston Community Foundation has administered the scholarship program, following an introduction from Bret Sanders, Board Chair of Sunshine Kids. Bret shared, “I had seen and heard of all the positive things Greater Houston Community Foundation does but became more involved with their impact on operating a scholarship program in my role as chairman of the River Oaks Scholarship Committee.” Through his involvement with the River Oaks Country Club Employee Scholarship, Bret experienced the Community Foundation’s full-service management of scholarship programs for donors and organizations.

Built for Clarity, Consistency, and Student Success

The Sunshine Kids Scholarship Program is designed to provide renewable support that students can rely on as they plan their education. As a renewable scholarship, students can access dependable, multi-year support that helps them stay focused on their education, while meeting eligibility requirements.  Bret shared, “Renewable scholarships are what make the Sunshine Kids Scholarship program so successful for our foundation. Renewable scholarships allow us to follow our ‘kids’ all the way through completion of their college careers and more importantly, allow the students to have more financial clarity on navigating their college costs and expenses knowing that each year their scholarship will renew.”

• Students attending a four-year college may receive $5,000 annually, renewable for up to four years, for a total potential award of $20,000.

• Students attending a two-year college may receive $2,500 annually, renewable for up to four years, for a total potential award of $10,000.

Scholarship funds are distributed directly to the student’s college and may be used for tuition, required academic fees, and book expenses. By helping to address the costs of higher education, this scholarship allows students to concentrate on their studies and future goals rather than the financial challenges that can come with pursuing a degree.
