Enbridge: Fueling Quality of Life
Enbridge safely connects millions of people to the energy they rely on every day, fueling quality of life through the company’s North American natural gas, oil or renewable power networks and their growing European offshore wind portfolio. Through every iteration of the company, giving back and supporting the community has always been ingrained in the Enbridge culture. In 2001, Enbridge established a Disaster Relief Fund at Greater Houston Community Foundation in response to Tropical Storm Allison. In 2006, identifying a need for a giving vehicle, they established a Corporate Donor Advised Fund with the Foundation to be used in support of community needs.
“Our partnership was flawless. We always communicated well and had a productive, warm working relationship. Greater Houston Community Foundation did all the vetting and granting for us, so we knew that every organization we supported was in good standing. In addition, they efficiently got our philanthropic dollars out the door to the organizations in the community we wanted to serve, ensuring good stewardship and judicious giving.”
Regan Kasman, Senior Advisor Corporate Citizenship
Enbridge’s Commitment to Community
Enbridge Fueling Futures, Enbridge’s Corporate Citizenship program, funds three core areas: Safe Communities, Vibrant Communities, and Sustainable Communities. Safety is at the heart of everything the company does, and that is why Enbridge supports local safety initiatives and organizations that help make the community more secure. Enbridge invests in inclusive, future-thinking programs that bring the best out in people to help the community become more vibrant. In addition, they invest in sustainability, supporting organizations that preserve habitats, and create a sustainable, greener future.
The impact that Enbridge has on communities throughout North America is vast. Since 2001, the company has granted over $25.4 million through its funds with Greater Houston Community Foundation. In addition to giving through the Foundation, they are celebrating their 30th anniversary as a $1 million supporter of United Way of Greater Houston. In May, they funded a study launched by Friends of RGV Reef that will examine whether the reef aids in reducing society’s carbon footprint. They also continue to serve as one of YES Prep Public Schools’ longest-running corporate partners to empower Houston youth in post-secondary pursuits.
Strategic Partnership for Greater Impact
Over the years, Greater Houston Community Foundation has helped Enbridge identify new philanthropic partners because of the deep, rich knowledge the Foundation has of the Houston giving landscape. This consultancy helped the company explore new opportunities. For example, when Enbridge wanted to identify a new environmental partner to invest in, Greater Houston Community Foundation helped Enbridge discover the Buffalo Bayou Partnership as a strategic philanthropic investment. Enbridge has sponsored the Buffalo Bayou Partnership’s Volunteer Program since 2020, helping to fund this program that is critical to preserving Houston’s most significant natural resource.
People want to earn a living and work for companies that are conscious of their surrounding communities. As a pipeline company, Enbridge exists to help fuel the quality of life. But, in addition to providing energy to many, they are a company that works to help fuel the quality of life within the communities they work and operate.
