Many donors come to us at a moment of uncertainty or transition. Whether it’s after a significant life event, a business milestone, or as they begin thinking more intentionally about the legacy they want to leave. They know they want to give, back but are not sure where to start or how to do it well. With so many charitable options and considerations, the process can quickly feel overwhelming. Yet time and again, donors discover that with the right partner, philanthropy becomes clearer, more intentional, and deeply fulfilling.

Greater Houston Community Foundation is committed to transforming the giving experience into one that is not only impactful but also enjoyable. Our approach centers on removing barriers and simplifying every step of the process so you can focus on what truly matters: amplifying your philanthropic impact.

A Simple Path to Establishing Your Fund

One of the most common things  donors tell us is  how simple it is to set up their charitable funds. Many donors report that they had assumed establishing a donor advised fund (DAF) would be complicated and time-consuming. However, they often find that the process is surprisingly straightforward. This simplicity encourages more people to take that first step toward meaningful giving, knowing it’s accessible and hassle-free.

“The Community Foundation has been the ‘easy button’ for me and my philanthropy. I show up, everything is curated with the best partners, and the staff is so helpful. Through working with the Community Foundation, I get to leverage the expertise of people who work in the philanthropic space all day, every day. Their staff has deep philanthropic knowledge and skills that I don’t have, and I feel fortunate to pull from their expertise.”

Chris Weekley, Community Foundation Fundholder & Immediate Past Board Chair

Personalized Support in a Digital Age

In today’s digital world, impersonal automated systems often leave donors feeling disconnected. At the Community Foundation, we believe that meaningful philanthropy thrives on personal relationships. Whether it is helping a family give together, a business owner after a liquidity event, or a donor balancing philanthropy with a busy life, our experienced team of philanthropic advisors is available to provide one-on-one guidance tailored to each unique goal and circumstance. Whether you have questions about the most effective ways to give, need help navigating tax considerations, or want advice on structuring your donations, our philanthropic advisors are here to offer clear, friendly, and knowledgeable support. This personalized approach not only simplifies the process but can help build your confidence, ensuring you feel genuinely supported and informed as you make a lasting impact in our community.

Building a Community of Giving

A fundamental aspect that donors find meaningful is the sense of belonging and shared purpose cultivated through participation in a local network of givers. When donors see their contributions as part of a collective effort to elevate the region’s quality of life, it fosters a deep sense of connection.

“Many people are open and willing to help, but do not know where to begin. That was me before the Family Giving Circle. It taught he how to use my voice effectively for the greater good while keeping me accountable.”

Cooper Ying, Family Giving Circle Youth Leader

Across generations, donors take pride in contributing to a larger philanthropic community—working collaboratively, supporting causes close to their hearts, and making a tangible, lasting impact on Houston and beyond. At the Community Foundation there are numerous ways to engage with other donors, whether it is through one of our Giving Circles, Community Impact Fund, Houston Opportunity Scholarship, or participating one of our programs, like our Quarterly Volunteer Days.

Each program, created specifically for our fundholders, helps them build stronger connections with other generous individuals and our community. This sense of unity not only amplifies individual generosity but also strengthens the social fabric of our community.

Simplifying Administration and Tax Processes

Central to our mission is the dedication to making charitable giving straightforward, efficient, and impactful. We manage the administrative and tax-related details, alleviating the burden of complex paperwork and IRS requirements from our donors.

For instance, when a donor contributes appreciated stock to their DAF, they receive a single, comprehensive tax receipt for the entire contribution—regardless of the number of grants distributed to various nonprofits afterward. This process simplifies tax reporting, streamlines record-keeping, and reduces stress during tax season. Additionally, we provide prompt, written acknowledgment for each gift and handle all necessary IRS documentation, further easing the administrative responsibilities for donors and their families.

Implementing & Managing Your Initiatives

Additionally, we provide board governance and philanthropic administration so that our partners and fundholders can focus on what matters most making a difference.

We rely on the team at the Community Foundation to provide us with statistics, data analysis, and number crunching to guide our decision-making, sharpening the tools we use to navigate this landscape.”

John Landa, Board President of Houston Nursing Education Foundation

The Community Foundation goes beyond advising on charitable strategy, we can help implement and manage the back-office operations of initiatives, including handling funds, paying bills, and helping you prepare for board meetings.

Accepting a Wide Range of Assets

Flexibility is a core principle of our services. We accept a diverse array of assets—including cash and noncash assets such as securities, real estate, closely-held business interests, retirement accounts, life insurance policies, and more. This broad acceptance enables donors to support their philanthropic goals in the most tax-efficient manner, aligning their giving with their unique financial situations and estate plans.

“There’s never a downside to exploring options with the Community Foundation. Often, neither I nor my client has landed on exactly what the right answer is—we need their expertise, and I appreciate their open-minded approach to conversations, focusing on big-picture goals.”

Jen Strauss, Partner at Ytterberg, Deering, Knull, LLP

Today, charitable giving is more accessible than ever, thanks to tools like donor advised funds, which empower families to engage meaningfully with the causes they care about while integrating philanthropy into their overall financial planning. And, by accommodating various asset types, we empower donors to maximize their impact and tailor their charitable contributions to best suit their charitable and financial circumstances.

Flexible Fund Management

A key advantage of working with the Community Foundation is the ability, for funds of $500,000 or more, to retain a preferred third‑party investment advisor. This allows donors to preserve trusted advisor relationships while benefiting from the Community Foundation’s philanthropic expertise and oversight.

At the Community Foundation’s 2025 Professional Advisor Breakfast, one of our panelists, Ann Deaton, shared about a partnership her client established with the Community Foundation where she was able to continue managing her client’s assets. She shared how this continuity was incredible comforting to her client who was going through a period of transition.

The Community Foundation lets you continue working with your financial advisors to accomplish your philanthropic goals. In addition to our proven ability to steward and manage the assets entrusted to us, we recognize that donors like you want confidence that your contributions are handled with transparency and accountability. That is why the Community Foundation offers flexible fund management options tailored to your individual needs, assuring you that your generosity makes a meaningful and lasting difference.
