What happens when philanthropic funders and community partners—civic leaders, nonprofits, businesses, and residents—work together with a shared purpose and a long-term vision? At Greater Houston Community Foundation, we believe in the power of collaborative giving to drive meaningful, lasting change. When donors come together with trusted cross-sector partners, they each contribute unique assets, perspectives, and capacities that—when aligned—can meaningfully address Houston’s most complex challenges with greater focus and impact, from economic mobility to disaster recovery to homelessness.

At the core of the Community Foundation’s vision is a deep belief in the transformative power of community-driven philanthropy—an approach rooted in partnership, local insight and voices, and a commitment to collective progress. We understand that resilient, vibrant communities are built on the collective efforts of community partners, resident leaders, and philanthropic funders coming together to meet local needs, not just in times of crisis but for the long-term.

Through strategic partnerships, data-informed decision-making, and collaborative giving, the Community Foundation works alongside donors and partners to strengthen Houston’s philanthropic ecosystem—making it more resilient, responsive, and effective.

Why Collaborative Giving Matters in Houston

A strong philanthropic ecosystem doesn’t happen by accident—it’s built through intentional, strategic partnerships. At the Community Foundation, we collaborate with donors, nonprofits, businesses, and other civic partners to advance collaborative initiatives, align investments, and share knowledge. These partnerships help us do more together than any single actor could alone—expanding our collective capacity to drive meaningful, lasting change across Houston. We’re deeply grateful to our Community Impact Fund donors, whose generosity is helping the Community Foundation turn this vision into action.

Below are a few examples of how the Community Foundation is leveraging its network to catalyze impact through collaborative giving.

Turning Data into Action: Understanding Houston

Facilitating strategic, collaborative giving often begins with a shared understanding of Houston’s strengths and challenges. We offer this advising service to our donors, clients, and more broadly—to the community—through Understanding Houston.

Understanding Houston, a cornerstone of the Community Foundation’s Community Impact work, embodies our dedication to bring data, research, and evidence, alongside community voices, to advance solutions that keep Houston a vibrant, opportunity-rich city for generations to come. By aggregating data across 200+ different indicators, the Community Foundation has created a platform for understanding the key quality of life issues in the region’s three most populous counties – Fort Bend, Harris, and Montgomery. This knowledge has helped us better understand our region’s strengths and most pressing challenges, giving donors, nonprofits, community leaders, and residents the data they need to effect positive change in their communities.

Our strategic data partner on Understanding Houston, Rice University’s Kinder Institute for Urban Research, serves as a leading multidisciplinary think-and-do tank dedicated to addressing urban challenges in Houston, the broader American Sun Belt, and globally. The Kinder Institute’s research and data have been instrumental in helping the Community Foundation and other partners better understand and respond to critical urban issues—like economic mobility and disaster recovery—in Houston.

Since its launch, Understanding Houston has informed philanthropic focus, nonprofit strategy, and action. Through Understanding Houston’s impact survey, 96% of respondents note they have used Understanding Houston data or their learning from a briefing to inform grantmaking, nonprofit leadership, organization strategy, grant writing, case statements, presentations on community needs, or policy discussions. Of donors specifically 93% have reported the data has helped inform their grantmaking, philanthropic activity, or nonprofit leadership. To date, the Understanding Houston team has briefed more than 4,000 community leaders on key issues like—youth mental health, economic mobility & postsecondary education, disaster recovery & resilience, housing insecurity, and maternal health—focusing lately on intimate settings and gatherings that inform decisions and action.

“Thank you to Greater Houston Community Foundation for presenting Understanding Houston to our board—it was a highlight of our retreat! Your presentation opened our eyes to the challenges women in our community face and inspired our board members to do even more to make a difference. I wouldn’t be surprised if you receive calls soon, as many attendees expressed interest in having you present to other groups they’re involved with!”

Investing in Economic Mobility—Together

Our newest Community Impact pillar, the High-Impact Grantmaking initiative, is an inclusive effort designed to empower our donors and partners to invest together with the Community Foundation in innovative solutions that create catalytic community change, focusing on Houston’s most urgent challenges.

In Fall 2023, the Community Foundation’s Governing Board, with input from 175 key stakeholders engaged, selected economic mobility as the priority issue for High-Impact Grantmaking.  Through annual investments and ongoing partnership beyond the check, the Community Foundation supports organizations and collaboratives that are poised to create outsized impact to advance upward mobility with a focus on addressing intergenerational poverty among children and families in Harris County.

In 2024, the Community Foundation completed its inaugural High-Impact Grantmaking cycle, awarding $500,000 to three nonprofits—Connective, Grameen America, and Prison Entrepreneurship Program—with ambitious and credible visions and plans to scale their work and make meaningful change.

Donors give alongside the Community Foundation, leveraging strengths to maximize their philanthropic impact by co-investing to support high-potential solutions for the community.

The 2025 cycle is underway, and applications are now open! The deadline to apply is July 11, 2025. Learn more about the grant opportunity here.

Partnering for Resilience: The Greater Houston Disaster Alliance

The Community Foundation also has a long history of serving as a resource and collaborative partner during great hardship, providing opportunities for donors to support immediate relief and long-term recovery to Houstonians in need following disaster. In addition to supporting recovery for our most vulnerable residents, we partner with businesses looking to provide financial assistance to their employees who have experienced losses from federally qualified disasters.

While both the Community Foundation and United Way of Greater Houston have built reputations as local leaders with an incredible capacity to activate critical resources during times of crisis, the historic duplication of efforts often led to confusion among the community. Donors frequently perceived our efforts as overlapping, and nonprofits were often burdened with multiple grant processes––from applications, funding guidelines, to reporting.

With over 35 years of combined experience leading disaster recovery efforts and building on shared and unique strengths, the Community Foundation and United Way formed the Greater Houston Disaster Alliance (Disaster Alliance) in 2023 to ensure the region has the networks and systems in place to accelerate recovery effectively in times of disaster. Through an initial investment from Enbridge and Phillips 66, the Disaster Alliance catalyzes public and private partnerships and brings year-round focus to disaster preparedness and resiliency to reduce the harms caused by disaster on our most vulnerable residents.  In total, the Community Foundation and United Way have partnered with their donors and community to raise $45.1 million through four joint funds since 2020.

Giving Together: Giving Circles and Targeted, Collaborative Funds

When donors come together and connect around the causes they care about, they create a powerful space to share information, amplify each other’s giving, and create an even larger impact. Collaborative giving strengthens our collective ability to respond to immediate needs and builds a foundation for long-term community resilience. See how our donors have connected for a shared purpose and amplified their impact.

The Community Foundation is home to several community-based giving circles designed to facilitate collaborative giving in the greater Houston area. Giving circles allow donors with similar interests to come together, pool their donations, and recommend grants to the causes that matter most to them and address community needs. We’re honored to support these philanthropic leaders through pooled funds, grants administration, data and advising to inform their strategy.

  • The Family Giving Circle is made up of families and local youth leaders (students in grades 7-12) looking to leave Houston better than they found it.
  • The Next-Gen Giving Circle allows the next generation of aspiring philanthropists to develop and implement their own strategic giving programs.
  • Latino Giving Houston, our longest standing Giving Circle, has been giving together to organizations serving Latino communities in Houston since 2009.
  • The Asian American Youth Giving Circle encourages philanthropy in the Asian-Pacific American community and to bring a new source of funding to nonprofit organizations serving the Greater Houston area.

Youth Homelessness Fund (YHF): Over the course of ten years, the Youth Homelessness Fund (YHF) has awarded over $536,000 in grants to nonprofit organizations that develop and implement strategic solutions to aid youth experiencing homelessness in Houston. Established in 2013, this small group of committed funders focused on preventing youth from experiencing homelessness at a systems and community level. The YHF was a Field of Interest Fund facilitated by the Foundation to help build a local network of funders committed to reducing homelessness through leadership, education, advocacy, and collaborative grantmaking.

Houston Charter Seed Fund: Established at Greater Houston Community Foundation by the Brown Foundation in June 2021, the Houston Charter Seed Fund aims to convene and catalyze a community of philanthropic supporters, angel investors, champions, and board members to increase equitable access to capital for promising charter school founders and leaders, and help grow the next generation of exceptional charter schools. The Fund is a community project intentionally called a “seed fund” since its grantmaking is focused on burgeoning charter schools with plans for growth in Houston. The Fund’s overall outcome goal is to support the creation of 20,000 new, high-quality seats for Houston students by 2030. With $22 million awarded to 15 charter schools to-date, the Fund is well on its way to meeting this ambitious goal and is another example of the power of collaborative philanthropy.
